A friend suggested I talk with her and I did. The story is real and the behavior of AA seems real also (why am I not surprised). Yet another example of american corporate behavior at its worse. djf
From: "Patricia Mccarty" <pmccarty7 () hotmail com> To: dave () farber net Subject: federal bailout or tax payer robbery Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2001 18:03:08 -0500 Dear Dave, Thank you for listening. I believe the tax payers of this country will find it interesting to know that the 5 to 15 billion dollar bailout did not save jobs and or gaurantee their safety in the air. Instead, this horrific tradgedy will be used to futher line the pockets of corporate mongruls such as American Airlines. During the past week, all American employees upon log in were urged to phone their state representatives to appeal for industry bailout. We were even given names/address/phone contact for each state and were allowed to make the calls on company time ....Interesting to pay me Sept 17-21 to make calls to supposedly secure my job; and then upon completion of my shift , place a message in Email advising me thatthe following Friday (after AA was assured of the taxpayers money) will be my final day. My work group consist of sixwomen that have a average seniority of 17 years. Across the U.S.,there will be only nine travel centers to remain open and we are not being offered positions there. American Airlines had annouced 20,000 lays offs prior to receiving the bailout and I believe that number will hold with federal funds in hand. So,perhaps the financial "reds"of the first quarter will wash with the blood of our nation. American Airlines hada tremendous problem prior to September 11 due to their desire to monopolize the airline industry. The aquistion of TWA carried employee protection clauses, so American was already looking to release massive numbers and this diaster allows them to do so without the compensations that would have been required. They had offered a 10,000 dollar buy out last month in effort to cut ranks. Expiration date to take that offer ispast. Isn't it interesting that the offer expired after the federal government agreed to the bailout? American has many common markets with TWA -this has worked out sowell for them-not only to rid them selves of the payroll attached to the aircraft and routes.....but be subsidised by the federal government while doing so. I realize we are a small number and that American owns many in Washington , but let it be known lifes are still crumbling while our Board of Directors plots to use this as a platform to build a low cost carrier patterned after Southwest. We gave this company 20 years and even through the extreme stress of the past two weeks, we continued to believe in both the leadership of our company and the leadership of this country. I would still like to believe that President Bush cares about this 46 year old grandmother who is trying her best to raise a 2 year old child alone in the grand state of Texas. I know now that AMR does not. Thank you again for any ears that might hear our pleas...we want to work and take care of our families, not join the ranks at the employment offices. This story goes much deeper...there are thousands of us. Please email at pmccarty7 () hotmail com or phone 512.633.7070. Sincerely, Patricia McCarty a that Friday after days end , _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
