One small point of light re the World Trade Center enabled by modern
telecommunications. A friend of mine in NYC just returned from Mexico, where
she heard the following story.

A Mexican man working in a restaurant at the base of one of the big towers is
received a phone call from his wife in Mexico, who had learned of the
airplane incident on television in real time and told him to him to leave the building immediately. He did leave, and is alive today because of that phone
   call.

No way to confirm this story, and don't know if it has been written about. But
it is consistent with other press reports in the Gulf war that people in New
York City watching live coverage in Israel would call relatives in Israel to
warn them of impending or ongoing Scud missile attacks.
