Jets came too late

US FIGHTERS scrambled to intercept the hijacked planes used in last week's terrorist attacks, but apparently did not have enough time to reach their targets, an air defence official said late on Friday.

As soon as word of the hijackings reached Norad headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado, fighter jets took off.

According to CBS News, a total of five fighters took off from Massachusetts and Virginia. But a plane slammed into the World Trade Center two minutes after they took off, and the Pentagon was attacked seven minutes after take-off. --AFP
