James Bamford's 721-page dissection of the ultra-secret US National Security Agency, "Body of Secrets", looks at the methods cyberspooks use to eavesdrop on friend and foe. Its implications will make uncomfortable many Australians, not the least of which our spymasters. Its task is to intercept and analyse signals intelligence (SIGINT) -- e-mails, telephone calls and faxes -- and distribute the analysis worldwide to its "customers"; other Western defence and security organisations.
