I heard an NPR story on this, so I tracked down local coverage -- if
someone has a better URL about it I'd appreciate it since this one
gives very few details. On NPR, the firefighters seemed articulate and
noted that the flag they took off their truck was obstructing the
driver's view as well. Apparently this has become a huge deal in
Florida, though, with the firefighters viewed negatively for refusing
to go along with the nationwide flag, er, trend.

MIAMI-DADE
Anti-flag firefighters suspended with pay

Three Miami-Dade firefighters who questioned the placement of the
American flags on their fire engine have been suspended with pay
pending the outcome of an investigation into the matter.

Firefighters Jim Moore, Terry Williams and William Clark were
suspended Thursday evening, amid reports they had refused to ride a
firetruck adorned with the U.S. flag because they viewed it as a
symbol of oppression.

Clark, an 18-year veteran of the department, said the incident that
prompted the suspensions has been blown out of proportion. ``I, like
the other two gentlemen, have friends and people who lost loved ones
in the attacks on the World Trade Center,'' Clark said. ``We are not
without remorse or without grief, but we still feel that once the
smoke clears America is going to return to the same old America that
oppresses blacks and other minorities.''

The Miami-Dade Fire Department would not comment on the suspensions.
