Hi Ted

The world has a stake in the US remaining free and true to its founding principles. It saddens me to think a country of which I am so fond is falling into a despair, which perhaps it did not institute, but which it has embraced so readily.

I recall reading about Joseph McCarthy's House Unamerican Activities Committee and it is disturbing to think that nothing was learned from that experience.

We all mourn the tragedy of the lost in the September 11 attacks, but they can't be brought back or others saved by the hawklike jingoism that permeates much of the dialog. And I am always wary of anyone who invokes God as justification, backing what they do.

IP is one of the few places left where real debate and news is happening, and I thank Dave for that all the moreso because he does it at potential personal and professional risk.

all the best

Nathan

Nathan, thanks for saying what most Americans are increasing becoming afraid to say. At the moment, there is a good chance a company in the U.S. would go out of business if they did not have a 'God Bless America' sign at their front door in addition to a flag. As usual, almost anyone in power - not just bin Laden - wants to display that God (their definition of 'eternal truth') is on their side.

In a time of stress (real and/or manufactured) , the call for patriotism usually supersedes the rule of law.
