The Sharp SL-5000D, which started shipping last week, is not your average PDA. It's one of the first to run the open-source operating system Linux. And, given that it supports Java and C++ applications, it's not aimed at your average user. It's more geared toward salespeople or other on-the-road workers who need to run business apps. It's not quite done, either. Sharp shipped a limited quantity of the device--which it says is "not a beta, but not quite a full production unit"--and will work with users to improve it if necessary. You can look for the finished consumer version, the SL-5000E, sometime next spring.
