Tactics readied for a smallpox fight

Specialists ponder outbreak scenario

ATLANTA - Twenty-three years after the last case of smallpox, many of
the specialists who helped eradicate the disease met privately
yesterday to grapple with how they would fight a new outbreak,
unleashed by a terrorist.

The eradication of smallpox is held up by many to be one of the
greatest achievements of public health in modern times, but these
legends of public health told nearly 100 health specialists that all
of their painstaking work could come undone in an instant if some of
the weaponized smallpox stocks from the former Soviet Union slipped
into the wrong hands.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will release the full
details of its plan for responding to a smallpox outbreak in two or
three weeks, after the participants this week and local and state
public health officials have a chance to review the arrangements. But
the broad outline unfolded yesterday in a meeting a Globe reporter
was allowed to attend.
