So much for competition in the local market. If this gets passed, it's
dead, Jim. (See earlier messages on HR 1472)

BABY BELLS TOLD TO EXPAND HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SERVICE
The House Commerce Committee has approved a bill that would free regional
Bell phone companies SBC, Verizon, Qwest, and BellSouth from requirements
that they open their local phone markets to competition, but in exchange
would require those companies to provide high-speed Internet service in 20%
of their main switching centers within a year (and all of those centers
within five years), either through conventional phone lines or through
satellite or other wireless technologies. (AP/Washington Post 10 May 2001)
