(See earlier messages on HR 1472) NewsScan Daily, 10 May 2001 ("Above The Fold") BABY BELLS TOLD TO EXPAND HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SERVICE The House Commerce Committee has approved a bill that would free regional Bell phone companies SBC, Verizon, Qwest, and BellSouth from requirements that they open their local phone markets to competition, but in exchange would require those companies to provide high-speed Internet service in 20% of their main switching centers within a year (and all of those centers within five years), either through conventional phone lines or through satellite or other wireless technologies.
