The consumer privacy debate is being influenced by alarmists, according to FTC Commissioner Thomas Leary. Leary said that the FTC is unlikely to recommend consumer privacy regulations, despite the "new hysteria" surrounding the privacy debate. "People are beating the drum, and my sense is that the average person has far more privacy today than a century ago," said Leary. However, Leary does allow that there may be need for financial and medical privacy protections. And in the international sphere, Leary said that companies must prepare themselves to run the gauntlet of foreign privacy rules, even if that means exposing themselves to prosecution by other governments. The FTC will likely take a hands-off approach to regulating B2B exchanges, Leary said. (Computerworld Online, 6 June 2001)
