WHAT'S BAD FOR TELECOM IS BAD FOR REAL ESTATE A nationwide survey of commercial real estate has found that nearly half of the 46 million square feet of warehouses and other buildings converted in the last several years into telecom switching stations are now vacant. "The market just disappeared," says one real estate broker; another remembers wistfully that telecommunications "was going to be the savior of every vacant building in every downtown in America." Still, the survey's director remains optimistic: "Over the long term this is a growing market. It's not going away."
