WIRELESS ADVERTISING TAKES SHAPE

The Wireless Advertising Association has drafted guidelines for a standard
way to display advertising on cell phones and PDAs. The standards state,
for instance, the number of characters that an ad accompanying a short text
message may have, and how long a pop-up ad may occupy the screen. The WAA
hopes its guidelines will help jumpstart the wireless advertising industry,
giving encouragement to carriers and wireless providers who are spending
billions on next-generation networks. Ovum Consulting predicts that revenue
from wireless advertising will reach the billion-dollar level by 2006, but
Jupiter isn't quite as sanguine. It's sticking with a $700 million by 2005
forecast. (ZDNet News 2 Jul 2001)
