In-Depth: Cooling DWDM Market Should Heat Up in 2002 After a blockbuster period through most of 2000, the optical networking market cooled suddenly at the end of the year and the bad news snowballed in the first quarter of 2001. Numerous layoff announcements, downward revisions of earnings forecasts, plummeting stock prices, declining sales and increased inventories added up to a bleak picture. Make no mistake though, this market still has loads of potential and the outlook should begin to brighten later this year, says Richard Cunningham, senior analyst with Cahners In-Stat Group. Sales of Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems, key links in fiber optic networks, will grow modestly from $7.8 in 2000 to $8.6 billion this year and then resume fast growth in 2002, according to In-Stat.
