Hongkong Post To Sell Wireless Digital Certificates

HONG KONG, CHINA, 2001 AUG 22 (NB) -- By Adam Creed, Newsbytes.

Hong Kong's national postal service Hongkong Post is planning to offer
wireless digital certificates that mobile data phone subscribers can use
to conduct secure wireless transactions.

Hongkong Post's interest in mobile certification services is also in line
with Hong Kong government plans to develop wireless access to public services.

As Hong Kong's first public certification authority, the Hongkong Post
Certification Authority has been issuing digital certificates for over 18
months now under the name "Hongkong Post e-Cert."

In partnership with U.S.-based mobile security company Diversinet,
Hongkong Post said it will operate wireless certification authority
services and issue "Hongkong Post Mobile e-Certs."

As a certification authority, Hongkong Post will authenticate and vouch
for digital certificates presented by parties to wireless transactions.

The commercial launch is slated for the end of this year, the company said.

The organization says the Hongkong Post Mobile e-Cert will be recognized
by the Hong Kong government.

The Hong Kong government said in May - having launched an Internet portal
to government services earlier this year - it would provide wireless
access to public services.

Hong Kong's electronic service delivery (ESD) scheme provides a wide range
of public services electronically and via the Net.

For citizen-government transactions that require the use of digital
certificates to confirm identity, these have been available from post
offices for well over a year.

Hong Kong has a mobile phone penetration rate of 76 percent, one of the
highest in the world.
