Malaysia's high-tech zone said short of workers

CYBERJAYA, Malaysia (Reuters) -- Some of the world's top technology firms said
on Thursday the development of Malaysia's ambitious high-tech zone was on
track but warned that too much was being attempted with too few skilled
workers.

The comments came at the start of a three-day meeting of some of the world's
leading IT firms and the Malaysian government on its Multimedia Super Corridor
(MSC) project.

Stan Shih, chairman of Taiwan computer company Acer Inc., said MSC's problem
was probably that it had spread itself too thin in that it was getting
involved in too many areas when it lacked sufficient skilled personnel.

"The key in this global economy is to focus on some areas to be one of the
best in the world," Shih told reporters.

"I think the concern here is there are not enough knowledge workers," Shih
said. "We should not involve ourselves in so many areas when we don't have the
resources."
