IBM, Intel, Microsoft, and SAP are among more than 20 high-
profile technology companies forming the Business Internet
Consortium to allow better communication among competing
e-business software. The think tank will study how well
e-businesses' back-end software works with that of their vendors
and customers. Though Sun Microsystems and Oracle were absent
from the group, the roster of participating companies shows the
importance of cooperation for the future growth of e-business.
Participating firms expect 20 to 30 percent of the future
U.S. economy to be affected by e-commerce and want to ensure
that their various versions of software do not hinder
e-business growth. Standardization efforts are ongoing--last
month 37 tech companies signed an agreement to use RosettaNet XML
for e-business communication. (Cnet, 29 November 2000)
