China denies Win2K software ban
                    15:14 Friday 7 January 2000

THE Chinese Government has denied newspaper reports it has
placed a ban on Microsoft's Windows 2000 operating system in
favor of domestically produced products.

The Government issued a statement today watering down a
claim in the Yangcheng Evening News that it would adopt a
"Red Flag" Linux system as an alternative to the Microsoft
product.

Microsoft's Chinese division slammed the newspaper report,
saying it had received no notification of any decision to
limit Microsoft's reach into the region.

The company's claims were backed by China's Ministry of
Information Industry.

Microsoft said a Chinese version of the Windows 2000
platform would be released in March. The software is slated
for a 17 February launch in the US.
