According to an article in the Casper Star-Tribune, a company which
does tech support for ISPs has decided not to open a call center in
a Wyoming town because residents are too knowledgeable about
computers and won't work for peanuts.... -BG

Call center no longer considering Gillette

GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - The city will not be the location of a call
center for Internet service providers because residents tend to be
overqualified and want more pay than Stream
International intended to provide.

Susan Bigelow, executive director of the Campbell County Economic
Development Corp., told the city council the news Wednesday.

She said Craig Weinstein, director of facilities for the Canton,
Mass.-based company, told her Tuesday that the decision was based on
interviews, surveys and resumes from an open
house in Gillette in February.

More than 800 people attended the open house.

"According to Mr. Weinstein, the Gillette participants showed a high
Windows use, a high Internet use and some applications skills," she
said.

That skill level is appropriate for hardware and software technical
support, but is higher than needed for Internet service provider
technical support.

Meanwhile, Weinstein said Stream does not have enough business to
designate Gillette solely for software and hardware technical
support, she said.

"Not many of the applicants at the open house indicated a
willingness to work for less than $10 per hour, which is consistent
with the high skill level that was represented," she said.
