EUROPEAN FIRMS TOUT "ZIPPER-VDSL" FOR SPEEDY NET ACCESS
European semiconductor firm ST Microelectronics and Swedish telecom operator
Telia say they've achieved a technical breakthrough that could dramatically
increase Internet speeds. The "Zipper-VDSL" technology is based on a new
generation of silicon chips that are inexpensive to produce and capable of
delivering full-motion video over ordinary phone lines at speeds 10 times
faster than ADSL (asynchronous digital subscriber line) technology. The
companies say they're committed to bringing the Zipper-VDSL chips to market,
and hope to establish the standard for next-generation communications.
