Bell Atlantic Says Restores Northern N.J. Service

By Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bell Atlantic Corp. said on Wednesday that telephone
service was restored to tens of thousands of northern New Jersey customers
after it fixed a computer software glitch that started Tuesday morning.

Service was restored at 5:40 a.m. to Bergen, Essex and Passaic counties.
The outages began during routine maintenance at its Newark office at 12:30
a.m. on Tuesday, spokeswoman Soraya Rodriguez said. The outages affected
tens of thousands of customers, and were scattered and intermittent
throughout the day, she said.

Enhanced 911 emergency service, which provides extra data to computer
screens, was disrupted in 20 towns for the first three hours of the outage,
the spokeswoman said.

In answer to a question, Rodriguez said the outage was unrelated to any
testing for the Millennium Bug. ...
