        's Economic Future

June 22, 1999

Dear Colleague:

On behalf of the Office of Special Projects of the National Research Council, I
would like to invite you to a public briefing to mark the release of a new
report entitled Harnessing Science and Technology for America's Economic Future.
The public briefing will be held 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM on July 14, 1999
(Wednesday) in the Lecture Room of the National Academy of Sciences Building at
2100 C St., NW, Washington, DC. The co-chairs of the steering committee that
prepared the report, former Governor of Pennsylvania and U.S. Attorney General
Dick Thornburgh and SEMATECH Chairman Bill Spencer, will lead the discussion.
The full steering committee roster is attached.

The report examines how the United States can better utilize new science and
technology to improve economic performance over the next 10-20 years. The
steering committee headed by Thornburgh and Spencer developed long-term national
goals and specific action items in areas such as increasing S&T investments and
improving education. The report also contains papers and presentations from an
NRC forum event held in 1998. The activity is supported by the Carnegie
Corporation of New York.

Copies of the report will be available at the public briefing. If you plan to
attend, please contact Marion Ramsey (tel 202/334-2424; email mramsey () nas edu)
and feel free to pass the announcement along to colleagues who might be
interested.

Reporters should contact Barbara Rice in the Office of News and Public
Information (tel 202/334-2138; email news () national-academies org).

We look forward to seeing you July 14.

Sincerely,

Deborah Stine
Director, Office of Special Projects
