MCI WorldCom, which has a five-year contract to operate the National Science Foundation's vBNS ("very-high-speed Backbone Network Service) has begun a major upgrade of that network that will quadruple its capacity. The LA-to-SF portion of the network will be the first to be upgraded to allow the movement of 2.5 gigabits of data per second, which is equivalent to more than what 1,600 T-1 lines can carry.
