ATIP TECHNOLOGY SEMINAR ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "TV in the Next Millennium" Pete Schirling Senior Consulting Engineer, Internet Media Strategy and Market Development, IBM ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Time and Date: February 25, 1999 (Thursday), 6:30 PM Location: Tokyo ATIP offices 6-15-21 Roppongi, Harks Roppongi Bldg. 1F Minato-ku, Tokyo 106 tel. 03-5411-6670 fax 03-5411-6671 ABSTRACT The technology shift from an analog based TV system to a digitally based infrastructure will forever change how the world views and uses the medium of television. It will also make both mediums dependent on a single parameter, BANDWIDTH. Though the distinction between the traditional TV and the Personal Computer will only be evident to the viewer by the content received rather than its underlying technologies, bandwidth will be the key factor in the industries ability to deliver content. Emerging technologies including displays, security, networks and content and their impact, both direct and indirect, on the medium and our lives in the 21st Century will be discussed in this presentation but above all it will be bandwidth and its utilization that will dominate the industry and this talk. Biographical Sketch Pete Schirling has been with IBM for 33 years 30 of which were with IBM Microelectronics. He has been involved in many IBM projects including development of RISC architecture, flat film memory, and the IBM Digital Video Group which develops MPEG-related products. Mr Schirling is currently a Senior Consulting Engineer in the Internet Media Group, working on standards and alliances such as the MPEG (ISO/IEC JTC1/SC 29 WG11) and DAVIC (member of the Management Committee and Chief Editor for DAVIC specifications). In addition to chairing the U.S. MPEG committee and NCITS L3.1 (formerly X3L3.1), Mr Schirling is Head of Delegation for the United States at international meetings of WG11 as well as coproject editor for part 1, of MPEG-2, and ISO/IEC 13818-1 (Systems).
