Inktomi offers a caching product, normally deployed by ISPs for their clients only.
Caches are also sometimes deployed by some large web sites (possibly via hosting ISPs)
to increase server speed; this is "reverse" caching.

Sandpiper provides a turnkey service for web publishers which allows them to
reverse-cache their content at many sites worldwide. Sandpiper deploys and manages
systems (called "content distributors") at many ISP locations, which serve content
for all of Sandpipers' customers. Content distributors have a cache at the center,
but Sandpiper's technology includes a number of capabilities that go beyond caches,
such as:

  - sending users to the best site (avoiding congestiong *between* networks)
  - letting web publishers invalidate content on demand
  - providing collated logs back to web publishers
  - managing shared resources on behalf of multiple publishers
  - coupling with traditional caches to extend reach on freshness and log info
  - other services at web sites

i wonder if anyone on IP knows more about how sandpiper differs from Inktomi products,
or if they're competitors. from the general product overviews on the sandpiper and
inktomi websites they seem to
compete for the same type of business.

that are spread out across the Internet. Sandpiper this week is
expected to announce that America Online has made an investment
in the company and will user Sandpiper technology in its network.

i also thought that AOL used inktomi products, which would indicate that sandpiper
is more different than it seems.

thanks,
david
