Date: Wed, 07 Jan 1998 18:20:35 PST From: Ed Lazowska <lazowska () cs washington edu> This message describes the availability of an educational website concerning the Olympics. The site was developed by IBM, PBS, CBS, and the US Olympic Committee. The target audience is students in grades 4-8. Teachers, students, and parents should find this site highly engaging. Please redistribute this message as appropriate. The genesis of this project was the observation that the Olympics provide a "pre-scheduled 'teachable moment'" -- capturing the interest of many of the nation's kids. The site will contain a series of educational challenges, fun facts, and educational information based on figure skating, downhill skiing, and snow boarding -- three popular Winter Olympic events (even if you didn't know that the third *was* a Winter Olympic event!). There is also material for teachers on educational strategies related to the site and to the Olympics. Teachers will be able to access the site beginning January 15. It will become available to the general public on February 7th in conjunction with the launch of the Olympics. Right now, there is some overview information available there. http://www.ibm.pbscyberschool.org
