NET REGISTRARS ANGERED BY GOVERNMENT'S DOMAIN-NAME PLANS

The international organization called the Internet Council of Registrars
(CORE) is vowing to lobby against a recommendation by Ira Magaziner, the
Clinton Administration's special advisor for Internet issues, to allow only
one of seven proposed new domain names to be added immediately. Magaziner's
recommendation also would extend the existing rights of Network Solutions
Inc., which has an exclusive contract with the government to administer the
".com," ".net," and ".org" names. Don Heath, president of the Internet
Society, says now that the government is involved with these issues, the
situation is in "chaos." (New York Times Cybertimes 23 Jan 98)
