         Technologies for Interactive Movies

Place: University of Bristol, UK
Date: September 13, 1998 (Before the ACM-MM98 Conference)

Workshop is organized by:
ATR Media Integration & Communications Research Laboratories

ABSTRACT:

"Interactive movies" is one of the future concepts of the entertainment
media in which participants will be able to dynamically interact with
the actors and environments in the movies. New opportunities for the
active involvement in movies will be created through the integration of
internet technologies with specialized techniques for creating plot,
role, and character in movies. In order to realize such interactive
movies, it is necessary to understand basic cinematic techniques,
interaction technologies, and the creation of compelling content through
effective storytelling. The combination of web based mediation and
generative simulation of story events will enable participants to
experience the dynamic unfolding of movies through the interactive
involvement with virtual actors and the world which they inhabit.

Recent advances in technologies for generating interactive stories,
which will vary depending upon the activities of the audience and the
story line of the movie, enable the creation of a new approach to
interactive movies. Various kinds of computer graphics technologies
necessary for realizing virtual actors and scenes will be
described. Real-time interactions, generative methods for scene
creation, and web based mediation are the key technologies to be
covered.
