EVENT REMIT: AT&T CORP. and nine other carriers agree to build a $1.5 billion undersea fiber optic cable that will provide a direct digital connection between China and the U.S. The CHINA-U.S. CABLE NETWORK is planned to be completed in January 2000; it's expected to stretch more than 16,000 submarine miles in a loop system. The new system will transmit voice, data and images at up to a total of 80 gigabits per second; will allow the transmission of more than one million simultaneous calls. The cable will form a self-protecting ring with direct connections to Bandon, Oregon and San Luis Obispo, California in the U.S., and Shanghai and Shantou in China.
