South Korea's Samsung Electronics is claiming to have made a
major breakthrough in computer technology. Samsung today said it
jumped ahead of its competitors by developing a fully working
prototype of a one-gigabit dynamic random access memory, or
DRAM, chip. The world's largest memory chip supplier says the
one-gigabit DRAM chip is expected to be used commercially in the
year 2002 or 2003. Samsung says it is capable of storing 100,000
double-spaced pages of typewritten text, or 16 hours of audio
data.
