EE380 Computer Systems Colloquium Winter Quarter 1995-1996 Lecture #10 Date: Wednesday, Mar 13,1996 Time: 4:15-5:30 pm Location: Skilling Auditorium SITN: Wednesday, Channel E1, 4:15-5:30 pm Speaker: Professor David Farber The Alfred Fitler Moore Professor of Telecommunication Systems University of Pennsylvania Title: The Convergence of Computers and Communications -- further thoughts Abstract Prof. Farber will explore the impact of increasingly higher speed communications on the architectures of computer systems and the structure of operating systems environment. He will, in an elaboration of his ACM SIGCOM 95 AWARD keynote, examine what the opportunities are for the creation of interesting and new distributed systems based on the above changes and applications that would utilize these changes. Biography DAVID J. FARBER is the Alfred Fitler Moore Professor of Telecommunication Systems at the University of Pennsylvania where he is leading research in ultra-high speed networking and electronic commerce. He was responsible for the design of the DCS system, one of the first operational message based fully distributed systems and is one of the authors of the SNOBOL programming language. He was founding Vice Chairman of the SIGCOMM, one of the principals in the creation and implementation of CSNet, NSFNet, BITNET II, and CREN. He was instrumental in the creation of the NSF/DARPA funded Gigabit Network Testbed Initiative and served as the Chairman of the Gigabit Testbed Coordinating Committee. His background includes positions at the Bell Labs, the Rand Corp, SDS, UC Irvine and the University of Delaware. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and is the holder of the prestigious 1995 SIGCOMM Award. He serves on the Board of Directors of both the Electronic Frontier Foundation, where he is active in the preservation of freedon in Cyberspace and the Internet Society .
