The New York Times is doing a major series on the reordering of employment in the US this week. Today's issue begins with the overall details of job loss and job downsizing since the late l970s -- nearly one-third of Americans have lost jobs; nearly three-fourths have been or are threatened with job loss; incomes for the lower 80% are declining while the top 20% (who hold onto their positions) are increasing, etc. This series on the Downsizing of America, which should be excellent, judging from the initial 5 page effort, continues with: Monday: The company: one happy family, no longer; Tuesday: The community: pulled apart, scrambling to regroup; Wednesday The family: holes where the dignity used to be; Thursday: The college class: 25 years later, success and anxiety; Friday: Politics: a struggle to find the right sell; Saturday: Is there a better way? The search for answers. You can access these articles with related materials on The Times two web sites: http://www.nytimescom/downsize and America-on-Line @Times You can send comment to the Times to: downsize () nytimes com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The NY Times is encouraging discussion of the issues as well as personal experience stories through their e-mail address which strikes me as a pathbreaking use of the medium for action, sharing ideas and experiences and further journalistic rersearch (all in one)
