US to Appeal Indecency Ruling


The Justice Department said today it will appeal to the
Supreme Court a landmark ruling that struck down key parts of a
new federal law barring indecency on computer networks. The
decision had been widely expected since a special three-judge
federal panel in Philadelphia June 12 blocked enforcement of the
law on the grounds that it violated constitutional free-speech
rights. A Justice Department spokesman said the notice of appeal
will be filed on or before the July 2 deadline.
