Digital creates first Open Data Center for Internet
Commerce

.. Digital Internet Exchange Provides Customers Choice of Telcos,
NSPs/ISPs ...

..Faster, Cheaper, More Reliable Approach for Internet
Commerce...

Digital Internet Exchange, the Internet's first combined switching and
commercial data center, was announced and opened here today by Digital
Equipment Corporation. The exchange offers Internet service providers and
their customers mission-critical "lights-out" operation, a full range of
Internet services, and a choice of telecommunications carriers--a
combination no other commercial exchange provides.

The exchange is the first designed and built by a major computer maker.
For the first time, service providers can put business production systems
at a single site and receive system management and administration
services, according to Bob Supnik, Digital's vice president of Research
and Advanced Development. "Service providers now can keep their Web server
farms and their customers' commercial data securely at a major hub of the
Internet for instant access and transmission to multiple providers'
network routes. This unique concept eliminates the usual charges
associated with reaching a network hub, and lowers costs because customers
share services such as redundant electrical power, 7x24 staffing, and
high-speed communication links," he said.

Located at Digital's Network Systems Laboratory here, the exchange
supports network access for the world's largest corporate Internet
gateway. The lab is also home to Digital's AltaVista Internet search
service that is accessed more than 14 million times daily.

Digital's Internet exchange serves global Network Service Providers (NSP)s
and Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The exchange enables increased
reliability and lower costs through multiple telecommunications providers.
Initial telecommunications carriers at the exchange are MFS Telecom and
Pacific Bell.

ISPs can better serve their customers through easy access to established
traffic-switching centers in Silicon Valley--the heart of the Internet's
most explosive growth area. NSPs/ISPs at the exchange can connect to MFS
Telecom's MAE West network access point (NAP) in San Jose, CA, and Pacific
Bell's NAP in San Ramon, CA, fully utilize Digital's dedicated switching
capacity and co-location facilities, and still gain access to established
peering arrangements in other NAPs. ISPs around the world already have
expressed interest in becoming customers.

Digital's exchange supports the company's strong channels focus.
NSPs/ISPs will be the primary channel and will have the opportunity to
resell Digital's products and services. Businesses without an ISP will be
able to select one at the exchange.
