from Mort: Note that I am not going to try to argue that the Mongols were friendly travelers, but the facts of what they did in Persia are slightly different from the message contained below about killing everyone in Persia. They came closer to doing that to the Kingdom of Kiev, now of the Ukraine, than Persia. Genghis Khan did lay waste to some of the first Persian cities he came to, like the first he made a pyramid of the skulls of those killed and showed the leaders of the next town. It was said to contain 40,000 heads. It shortened the resistance of the future sieges. He basically conquered the country and then took the artisans to India and other places for them to make things more beautiful. That is how the art of Northern India got the way it is and why it looks so much like the Persian art. It was carried out by his grandson, not Genghis, who went back to the steppes of Mongolia to retire and die. mort meyerson
