U OF CALIFORNIA WANTS A PATENT ON APPLETS
The University of California has filed a request for a patent on "applet"
technology. Applets are software programs that work with Web browsers to
perform small, discrete tasks such as playing a downloaded video or audio
clip. UC, which refers to them as "Weblets," says the concept was
developed by a team of researchers at the university's Center for
Knowledge. The team's leader now heads up a company called Eolas
Technologies Inc., which has been granted exclusive rights to the
technology. Eolas will act as UC's licensing agent, should the patent be
approved. Critics say the technology was in use prior to "Weblets," and
that the patent's parameters are too broad. (Chronicle of Higher Education
