The last department is moving out of the Mill as of tomorrow, Sept 29. Only about 30 employees are left now, and tomorrow there will be none. There are cobwebs growing in the unoccupied floors, and the spiders will soon have the place to themselves. I've been here most of my 17 years with DEC, the last 8 continuously. I'm going to miss the three-dimensional maze. The cacaphony of dollies on the uneven wooden floors. The river, the fish feeding under the bridge. The clocktower, the bell, the green and red backlighting at Christmas. Windows that open, birds flying into conference rooms, bubble wrap around the sills to keep out the winter. Plywood partitions, the undulations of building 3, pencils rolling to one side of a listing desk. Having a sub shop that's closer than the cafeteria. An environment that turns pretension into a charade. See you on the widening gyre...
