David,

Something that I'm sure your Interesting People list would
like to know. By the way, John is exactly the right person for
this job. He has been involved in the HPCC program from the
beginning, knows all the players and has the necessary management
skills to keep the high powered egos on all sides working toward
the right goals. CONGRATULATIONS JOHN and GOOD LUCK!

WHITE HOUSE NAMES CHIEF OF ADVANCED COMPUTING
RESEARCH

The Administration today named John C. Toole to direct
the
inter-agency High Performance Computing and Communications
(HPCC)
Program, the government's premier high-technology research
program
aimed at advancing the information superhighway. The
appointment is
    effective March 1.

Mr. Toole most recently served as the Executive
Director of High
Performance Computing for the Department of Defense
Advanced Research
Projects Agency. A biography is attached.

"John Toole's appointment brings us the first full-
time director
for the HPCC program, and demonstrates the Administration's
continuing
commitment to make the most of information technology for
all
Americans," noted Dr. John H. Gibbons, Assistant to the
President for
Science and Technology and Director of the Office of
Science and
    Technology Policy. "High-performance computing is
revolutionizing
commerce, health care, communications, and virtually every
other
aspect of our economy and our daily lives; this program is
a model for
directing the fruits of American research to the needs and
interests
of the American people. If information is power -- and it
certainly
is in today's world -- HPCC is the key to power for us as
citizens and
for the nation as a whole."

The HPCC program involves 12 government agencies
tasked with
finding ways to keep America at the forefront of computing
and
communications research and helps make these technologies
available to
a variety of users. Created in 1991 under legislation
sponsored by then-Senator Al Gore, the program serves as
the focal
point for Administration efforts to make sure that advances
in
information technology are used to improve such areas
as education, public health, weather forecasting, emergency
response
and preparedness, and effective business and manufacturing
practices.
It has a proposed budget for FY96 of about
    $1.2 billion.

The appointment was announced jointly today by Dr.
Gibbons and
Dr. Anita Jones, Director of Defense Research and
Engineering at the
Department of Defense. Mr. Toole replaces Dr. Donald
Lindberg, who
also served as Director of the National Library of
Medicine (NLM) of the National Institutes of Health during
his
two-year tenure as HPCC director. Dr. Lindberg will return
to
    full-time service with the NLM.
