"MORE PRACTICE, LESS THEORY," SAY SOFTWARE COMPANIES Software companies say American universities are turning out students with little practical training applicable to the real world of software code writing. "There's no reason why a class can't build a whole operating system in a semester. But that rarely happens," says an Oracle Corp. senior VP. But educators contend that a broader approach is more beneficial over time: "Employers encourage students to get very narrow, very deep experience that meets their company's current needs, but in the long run breadth is better," says a computer science prof at the University of California at Berkeley. The University of Illinois is experimenting with letting 10% of its computer science majors tackle a commercial project during their senior year. (Wall Street Journal 2/21/95 B1)
