a forrunner of things to come I suspect PACIFIC BELL TO CUT DAYTIME LOCAL CALLS BY 44% /DJCR/ - The Pacific Bell unit of Pacific Telesis Group is slashing the price of daytime local toll calls, in an effort to compete with long-distance companies. PacBell is increasing basic service rates to make up the difference. PacBell is cutting local toll-call prices by an average 44%, as of Jan. 1. The California Public Utilities Commission approved the cuts as part of its decision to allow competitors to enter the local toll call business in California. That market represents about 30% of Pacific Bell's revenues. The commission also ordered an increase in Pacific Bell's basic service rates. Flat-rate residential service will increase to $11.25 a month from $8.35. Pacific Bell will also begin volume discount plans for residences and businesses. 09/15/94 05:53 PM EST ----- End of Included Message
