Fellow Members of the WWW/MBONE/Internet Communities:

The Second World Wide Web Conference will be held in Chicago, 17-20 October,
1994. The meeting has been extensively oversubscribed; to accommodate persons
interested in the meeting who will not be able to attend, the meeting is to be
multicasted live over the MBONE on 18-20 October only. The MBONE
(Multicasting backBONE) is an experimental virtual network which is
superimposed on top of the Internet. It allows the transmission and reception
of live video and audio; audio communication will be two-way, allowing
questions to be entertained over the Internet. Video will be one-way only,
coming from the meeting. For a complete schedule of the meeting,
indicating which sessions are to be multicasted, connect to the URL:

   (or click http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/IT94/Agenda/Agenda.html";>
here if your newsreader supports URLs)

Appended below, you will find URLs pointing to further information about the
MBONE (including information about how to get onto it, and how to find and
install the requisite software). *PLEASE NOTE* that the MBONE is an
experimental system. Depending upon network performance, video appears at up
to ~8 frames per second; audio quality can vary from excellent to
incomprehensible (generally it is quite adequate). If you intend to
participate in the meeting via MBONE, please be aware of its limitations,
and be prepared to participate in a spirit of patient and relaxed collaborative
experimentation.

Because use of the MBONE is currently restricted to UNIX workstations,
we are also establishing REMOTE CONFERENCE SITES, at which received MBONE video
will be projected onto a screen. A microphone will be present, to allow
questions to be sent to the meeting hall during question periods. For
planning purposes, some remote sites require that you reserve a spot in advance.
A list of the currently registered sites appears below.

Although anyone is welcome to participate via the MBONE, if you wish to set
up a registered remote conference site (one that will be listed in subsequent
postings of this message, and the aossciated WWW documents), you must be
knowlegeable about MBONE software (the organizers do not have the resources
to help remote sites set this up), and be willing to accommodate at least 10
people, providing the requisite projection and audio equipment.
Contact Jason Ng (likkai () ncsa uiuc edu) to announce your desire to be added
to this list.

Best Regards, R. P. C. Rodgers (NLM) and Joseph Hardin (NCSA)
(Members, International WWW Conference Committee)
