H M TREASURY LAUNCHES SERVICE ON THE INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY
*************************************************************

H M Treasury is launching today a new
information service which enables anyone on the
Internet to access Treasury publications and
press releases.

Publications available on the Treasury Internet
Service include:

     *    Press releases

     *    Ministers' speeches

     * Minutes of the Chancellor's Monthly Monetary
Meetings with the Governor of the Bank of England

     * Reports of the Panel of Independent
          Forecasters

     * Details of the Fundamental Expenditure
          Review of Treasury Running Costs.

The Chancellor's Budget Speech and Budget Press
Releases will be available on Budget Day shortly
after he has finished speaking.

The Treasury plans to extend the range of
available information in due course.

The Treasury Internet Service is available to
anyone who has access to the Internet, and is
free of charge. Launching the new service, Sir
Terry Burns, the Permanent Secretary to the
Treasury said,

"This new service enables anyone who wants to
keep in touch with the Government's economic
policy to do so easily and cheaply. It is
another important step in making the Treasury
more open and outward looking.

"The Treasury Internet Service will be
invaluable for researchers, economic
commentators, journalists and students who want
to obtain the full text of Treasury
announcements and publications. And as more and
more people are connected to the information
superhighway - at home or at work - they will
all be able to use this service.

The Treasury Internet Service can be accessed in
a variety of ways, from simple electronic mail
to the state-of-the-art World Wide Web. More
details of how to use the service are in the
attached Notes for Editors.
