From: cameronj () mcc com via the efj () twics com mailing list The MPT Telecommunications Council will likely suggest in its soon- to-be-released report that an optical fiber network be built in three steps by 2010 to link cities and towns across the country by 2010. Predicting that the integration of communications and broadcasting services will create a 123 trillion yen ($1.18 tril) market and 2.43 million new jobs by 2010, the seven-chapter report says that investment in optical fiber cable network construction alone will reach 33-53 trillion yen ($317.31-509.62 bil) between now and 2010. It recommends that a Japanese version of an information super-highway link major regional cities which seat prefectural governments by 2000, cities with a population of 100,000 or more by 2005, and small cities and towns by 2010.
