BART directors voted unanimously today to approve an innovative
deal in which its right-of-way will be used for a potentially
lucrative fiber-optic telecommunications system.
The agreement calls for Metropolitan Fiber Systems Network
Technologies of Omaha, Neb., to spend up to $44 million to build what
BART General Manager Richard White described as ``one of the most
advanced telecommunications systems in the transit world for the
forseeable future.''
