FOR RELEASE ON SEPTEMBER 7th 1993 ACM SIGCOMM AWARD GOES TO ROBERT E. KAHN NEW YORK, September 7 1992. The Association for Computer Machinery's Special Interest Group on Data Communication (ACM SIGCOMM) announced today that it has given its annual SIGCOMM Award to Dr. Robert E. Kahn for his "visionary technical contributions and leadership in the development of information systems technology." Dr. Kahn will receive his award at SIGCOMM's annual conference in San Francisco on September 15th. Dr. Kahn is the president of the Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI), a not-for-profit organization founded in 1986 to provide technical leadership and funding for research and development in information infrastructure. At CNRI, he leads a national effort to develop gigabit speed computer networking technology. Prior to founding CNRI, Dr. Kahn spent thirteen years at the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), where he started the research efforts which developed such critical technologies as TCP/IP (the protocols used on the Internet today), and packet radio and satellite networks. He also founded and supervised ARPA's Strategic Computing Program, which led to innovative architectures such as the iWARP and the Connection Machine. He received his B.E.E. from City College of New York, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a fellow of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence. He is a recipient of the IEEE's Koji Kobayashi Award, the Public Service Award from the Computing Research Board, the ACM Systems Software Award, the INFOWORLD Product of the Year award, and twice recipient of the Secretary of Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Award. The SIGCOMM award is a lifetime achievement award, given annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of data communications over a number of years. It is widely recognized as the premier award in data communications. The previous winners of the award are Paul Baran, Leonard Kleinrock, David D. Clark, Hubert Zimmerman, and Alexander G. Fraser. ACM SIGCOMM is a professional society for persons interested in data communications. Founded in 1969, it has a membership of approximately 5,000 people, most of whom are researchers and developers. SIGCOMM publishes two journals and hosts an annual SIGCOMM conference. ###
