TOKEN-RING VS. ETHERNET. The runaway success of Ethernet has led some
experts to wonder about the long-term viability of the other main LAN
topology, token-ring. Ethernet has proven cheaper and faster, but token-ring
still has a few die-hard supporters, primarily larger corporations steeped
in IBM equipment. An IBM marketing manager notes that the question may be
moot in a few years, when all LAN topologies are replaced by asynchronous
transfer mode. (Communications Week 9/16-22/93 p.69)

ON THE WAY. Microsoft's Bill Gates said in a speech that Microsoft will be
involved in developing a system that will integrate the phone, fax, copier
and printer. He also talked about a wallet-size PC that could store a
person's credit accounts, agenda, address and phone lists and be able to
recognize handwriting and voice commands. (Atlanta Constitution 8/20/93)
