i mucked up and mistook some files that were legitimately added by the
admin near the same time as the attackers added their software as their
toolkits.

i would like to thank, however, everyone who replied with comments. yep,
it's possible, just not occuring in this case. thanks, though, for the
information.

more details of the attack are forthcoming. it was evidently by some
people using the mIRKfORCE IRC setup (http://hackreport.magicnet.org/).
