An older router running an older IOS that doesn't know about RFC1918, that is passing internal "non-routable" IPs? ms -----Original Message----- From: Etaoin Shrdlu [mailto:shrdlu () PACBELL NET] Sent: Monday, February 07, 2000 11:52 PM To: INCIDENTS () SECURITYFOCUS COM Subject: Private networks and home.{net|com} So we're looking for a little odd something, and we do a simple traceroute, and what do we see? What the heck are those IP addresses at hops 15, 20, and 21? I thought that those weren't supposed to be passed, and there are three of them in one traceroute. This kind of destroys the meaning of the concept of a "private network," especially if insane numbers like these are going to show up in routing tables. Am I just not understanding something here? 1 some.company (x.x.x.x) 5.208 ms 2.421 ms 1.699 ms 2 same.place (x.x.x.x) 2.471 ms 3.321 ms 2.124 ms 3 still.same (x.x.x.x) 2.415 ms 3.1 ms 3.830 ms 4 * * firewall.place (x.x.x.x) 126.303 ms 5 almost.out (x.x.x.x) 1077.584 ms 1006.508 ms 889.111 ms 6 130.152.148.1 (130.152.148.1) 928.683 ms * 795.47 ms 7 209.232.128.189 (209.232.128.189) 834.992 ms 845.508 ms 890.524 ms 8 edge1-ge2-0.lsan03.pbi.net (206.13.29.205) 810.744 ms 816.512 ms 998.651 ms 9 lang1sr3-so-1-1-3-0.ca.us.prserv.net (165.87.157.130) 1037.866 ms 988.369 ms 1100.24 ms 10 lang1br1-ge-1-0-0-0.ca.us.prserv.net (165.87.32.121) 1159.813 ms 1047.431 ms 1006.113 ms 11 sfra1br2-t3-2-1-0-0.ca.us.prserv.net (165.87.13.49) 1037.328 ms 1051.618 ms 905.736 ms 12 sfra1sr3-ge-1-3-0-0.ca.us.prserv.net (165.87.33.152) 993.902 ms 1018.261 ms 881.349 ms 13 165.87.161.65 (165.87.161.65) 968.424 ms 1068 ms 1113.479 ms 14 bb2.mae-w.home.net (198.32.136.70) 1083.819 ms 1151.943 ms 1021.389 ms 15 172.16.1.98 (172.16.1.98) 1099.298 ms 1098.742 ms 1176.322 ms 16 c1-pos9-2.snjsca1.home.net (24.7.72.25) 1235.212 ms 1104.324 ms 1117.250 ms 17 c1-pos3-0.snfcca1.home.net (24.7.66.33) 1161.162 ms 1071.815 ms 1157.974 ms 18 c1-pos4-3.sttlwa1.home.net (24.7.66.13) 1232.264 ms 1077.714 ms 1076.723 ms 19 bb1-pos2-1.rdc1.bc.home.net (24.7.73.18) 1119.752 ms 1060.118 ms 1130.102 ms 20 10.0.186.102 (10.0.186.102) 1177.201 ms 1223.590 ms 1132.496 ms 21 10.0.186.58 (10.0.186.58) 1188.440 ms 1275.372 ms 1151.896 ms 22 cr213472-a.poco1.bc.wave.home.com (24.113.4.129) 1148.945 ms 1122.249 ms 1154.468 ms -- COMPASS [for the CDC-6000 series] is the sort of assembler one expects from a corporation whose president codes in octal. -- J.N.
