PayPal has fired a high-profile salvo at Apple in the high-tech
companies' battle over mobile payments.

In a newspaper advertisement Monday, PayPal used a little humor to
attack Apple over the well-publicized security breach in its cloud
system, according to a story in the San Francisco Chronicle.

The ad reads: "We the people want our money safer than our selfies.
PayPal, protecting the people's economy."

The move comes as Apple prepares to take on PayPal with a mobile
payment system that allows consumers to pay for items by flashing
their iPhones or Apple Watches next to a cash register reader.

Apple's new system will launch next month at 220,000 retailers across
the country.

PayPal says it currently has more than 152 million active registered
accounts and processes 9.3 million payments a day.
