MH370

(In honour of all those of our ilk who manage to generate panic at the slightest
sign of a possible, potential threat ...)

(I'm at CanSecWest, and some of the talks are getting pretty far out there ...)

In the shifting worries about the loss of flight MH370, one fact is getting
lost.

American authorities have information that MH370 flew on for several hours,
even after radio, radar, and transponder access was lost. This is because the
engines apparently communicate with Boeing every half hour while in flight.

This is a massive privacy risk. Everyone owning or operating a Boeing wide-body
aircraft could be tracked. In fact, since it is the Rolls Royce engines that
are reporting quite possibly anyone operating any vehicle or vessel posered by
Rolls Royce engines might be susceptible.

The engine data can be used to estimate the speed of the craft. Differential
data could be used to estimate turns, but may not be reliable. Since we know
the speed, but not the direction we only have 50% of the data necessary for
velocity. According to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, therefore, this
means we have a 50% chance of knowing the position.

(Too soon?)
