Robert Graham <robert_david_graham () yahoo com>:

The right-wing (especially the Tea Party) wants less international,
national, or
even state government. They want government to be local. It should be
your city,
for example, that taxes people and pays for roads, not the US federal
government.

The left-wing wants to go the other way, taking away the powers of local

government and giving them to the national (or international) bodies.

That's certainly one common way of looking at it. I don't think, though,
that it actually fits the facts.

For instance on the subject of marijuana legalization, or "right to die"
issues, it's the 'left' that wants local control (California pot
dispensaries, states that want to allow doctors to prescribe euthanasia),
and the 'right' that swoops in with the Federal law-enforcement jackboots
to prevent it. Same for same-sex marriage (San Francisco would like to
allow it, but the State of California, and especially the DOMA'd Feds,
won't let them).

So in fact what happens (not surprisingly) is that where there are local
groups that are further 'left' than the less local groups, the 'left'
wants local control. Whereas when there are local groups that are futher
'right' than the less local groups (as in Arizona), the 'right' is all for
local control. And oppositely the other way around.

imho the fact that the left and the right are different in some
symmetrical ways isn't evidence against Maes being a whack-job. I think
it's pretty clear, when he says things like "This is all very
well-disguised, but it will be exposed", that he's either gone rather off
the deep end, or he's wanting to appeal to people that have. The
implication is, not just that the ICLIE is wrong or a bad idea (which one
can believe while still being rational), but that the ICLIE is a
well-disguised cover for something else. Which, absent any evidence
beyond what we have, is nutty...
